How has Matt developed his skills as a Site Manager?

There’s so many different diverse areas to look in when choosing a venue. You need direction from your client and the artist. There’s no text book in saying this is what you must do when choosing a venue. It’s all about gaining the experience, whether you work for a few years without, no pay or minimum pay, and being someone’s shadow and watching how they do things and finding out, OK, well I didn’t learn that, they didn’t actually say if that didn’t work you must do this, OK, well that’s how that guy sorted it out, I’ll know that for next time. So there’s no text book; you can’t just read it out of a book and go ‘Hey, I’m now a venue chooser, I know exactly what I’m on about' because there’s going to be different hurdles coming from different ends, whether it be a client, venue, contractors, area, location, whatever the case may be there’s always going to be a hurdle and you’ve just got to pick that up with experience.

It’s something that I’ve still got a lot to learn and I will never stop learning because there’s always going to be a different hurdle that I wouldn’t have faced before so it’s all about working with the people around you and getting their advice and, you know, two heads are better than one, three heads are better than two. So always take advice and always take in what other people say and you won’t have a problem.
