The most successful site would have been in Turkey, in Istanbul, where we ran the Australian reception for a United Nations conference on urban planning for the next 20 years. We found an underground Roman water reservoir that was 2,000 years old and we held our reception there as opposed to all of the other five-star hotels that other countries did. Was it difficult to get permission for that? No, not really. We invited the Lord Mayor and he’d never been there, and so when anybody came up with a challenge as to ‘can you do this?’ and ‘can you do that?’ we said, ‘But the Lord Mayor is coming!’ and all of the problems seemed to disappear.
