Recruit volunteers – Going solo

Do the following activities to develop your knowledge and skills to recruit volunteers. Work through the activities in the suggested order, or go straight to the activity you need to do.

Activity one

Volunteering review

Why is volunteering growing in Australia and what motivates people to volunteer? Review the reasons behind volunteering to help you to attract the right volunteers and prepare for recruiting your volunteers.

Activity two

Assess the need for volunteers

How do you know your organisation and your event are appropriate for volunteers? Develop your skills to analyse the characteristics and needs of events, to determine appropriate opportunities for volunteers.

Activity three

Identify benefits, risks and costs of using volunteers

As part of your event planning you need to know what the benefits, costs and risks will be of using volunteers. What are the typical issues here for a not-for-profit event?

Activity four

Audit the legislative needs for using volunteers

Research and identify the legislation and industry codes that apply to volunteers, and the impacts these requirements have on your recruitment processes.

Activity five

Design work roles and positions

Now you are ready to prepare a task audit for volunteer roles and then create the position descriptions.

Activity six

Target volunteers

You need to plan how you will target the right volunteers for your event. Identify specific sources for finding volunteers and the potential advantages and disadvantages of each.

Activity seven

Plan communications with volunteers

Volunteers and the event team require a lot of communication to ensure the event runs smoothly and everyone knows what to do on the day. Develop plans which detail the ‘who, what, how and when’ of your communications.
