Retain volunteers – Network

The following activities are a way to gain knowledge and skills by collaborating with others in your learning group. Select the name of the activity to get the brief for your group work.

Activity one

Discuss volunteers' skills

The first step to matching volunteers to job roles is getting to know them. To do this, your tools include 'screening questions' to get detailed information about a volunteer's general and specific employability skills. Review short profiles of three volunteers and discuss what they have to offer, and devise the screening questions to find out more.

Activity two

Co-author an induction manual

Most organisations develop a volunteer 'induction manual' to provide everyone with the same essential information about the event/organisation, support, training, and rights and responsibilities. Create an induction manual online, with contributions from everyone in the group.

Activity three

Role play volunteer interviews

Ongoing monitoring and support for volunteers is needed to ensure jobs are performed correctly and to get the best from your volunteers. Practise your communication and problem solving skills by role-playing an interview with a volunteer who has come to you with issues that need following up, and talk to them about their ideas for improving volunteer processes.
